ITOs welcome skills for Canterbury package

12 May 2011

Industry Training Organisations in the building, construction and infrastructure sectors look forward to working with Government, industry and providers to deliver the Skills for Canterbury package.

Ian Elliott, chair of the BETA group of ITOs, said the response was comprehensive and appropriate.

“We have been involved in developing a response to the needs in Canterbury, and it is great that the Government has taken our ideas on board. Now the hard work starts,” he said.

“In particular ITOs have a responsibility to ensure that high standards are maintained across the various industries and that all the trades needed are included.

“By necessity, reconstruction work needs to be fast-tracked, but that doesn’t mean that we can compromise on standards. Quality training is key to that.”

Mr Elliott said the package would also require a greater level of collaboration between ITOs and providers.

“There is great will to make this package work to support the reconstruction of Canterbury and the industries that are based there,” Mr Elliot said.
